Total Recall Movie Review

How ironic that a film whose key conceit involves wiped-out memories is so easily forgettable itself… The new Total Recall, adapted from a Phillip K Dick short story, and remake of the 1990 Arnold Schwarznegger starrer, is a joyless bore of a film that possesses none of the campy charm of its predecessor.I’m going with two out of five for Total Recall. The action scenes are engaging, and perhaps the film might appeal to those who haven’t watched the earlier version. For the rest of us though, it’s a good thing we won’t have to visit Rekall to delete all memories of this new film.

And you thought it's time to recall... rewind... reboot... the 1990 movie by the same name. Well, the plot is almost same, but rest assured, Total Recall 2012 is understandably more hi-tech, racy and edge-of-the-seat kind of sci-fi thriller. this is exactly where the re-packaged Total Recall breaks away from its predecessor. Colin Farrell's Quaid is more quick with the kicks, good with the gadgets, great with the guns... and good with the babes. And when he is all confused, courtesy the reality versus fiction war, he looks it. Of course, he is smart to live in the moment: For him, it is not about who he was, but who he is. In this case, fighting for the right cause.

Total Recall is as much about mind and memory as high-end gadgetry and dystopian mayhem. From first scene to last, there is a touch of speed and spectacle. Visually, it's nearly as good as any film of the sci-fi genre. One of the reasons why the film works is that it does not pretend to be cerebral like Memento and other such films and instead, follows the rule it seems to have set out for itself -- to hammer it out as sleekly as possible. In light of that, Total Recall is an adrenaline-pumping effort, engaging and entertaining at the same time.
