Kismat Love Paisa Dilli Movie Review

Ratings:1.5/5  KLPD Review by Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN (IBNLive)
There’s little to recommend here apart from the occasionally clever dialogue, and some moments – very few – that are genuinely funny. What the film sorely lacks is an element of unpredictability – that one key quality that made Khanduri’s earlier film stand out. Teasing you with at least three instances where you think the film is finally over, KLPD goes on and on and on, and climaxes in an underwhelming finale with a forced patriotic message. Even the performances are nothing to write home about, and it’s a bit of a stretch to cast Mallika Sherawat as a simple, helpless girl. Vivek Oberoi plays the horny opportunist convincingly, but the film doesn’t exploit that beyond a point.

KLPD - KISMAT LOVE PAISA DILLI comes across as an underprivileged clone of Khanduri's first film. The energy is intact. It's just that the narrative lacks the inventiveness and ingenuity of his first film, which I regard as its major blemish. Also, this one is vulgar, offensive [the gay jokes especially], crass and embarrassing. Most importantly, KLPD - KISMET LOVE PAISA DILLI is handicapped by a lackluster script. Not only is the basic premise similar to EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL, Khanduri fails to pack it with amusing and engaging moments. On the whole, KLPD - KISMET LOVE PAISA DILLI is a comedy that neither entertains nor tickles. In fact, this comedy is more of a tragedy!

Sanjay Khanduri’s story is hotch-potch and offers no novelty whatsoever. His screenplay is also replete with clichéd scenes, some of them obnoxious and of the kind which would hurt sensibilities. There are just too many characters and incidents which happen in one night, making the entire drama rather unbelievable. On the whole, Kismet Love Paisa Dilli is a poor show and will not get the love of the audience. It will entail heavy losses for all concerned.

Kismet, Love, Paisa, Dilli (KLPD) is no 'stand-up' comedy. Neither will any part of you feel like giving it a standing ovation. This is as much of a dhoka, as the slang version of KLPD actually suggests. It is a string of episodes, part slap-stick, part-ridiculous, part comedy (the smallest part, of course) that all happens in one long night.Vivek tries hard to make this a legit laugh-a-thon. But with excessive toilet humour, and a script that leaves no scope for anything but that, he can't keep going for too long.'KLPD' is not a patch on director Sanjay Khanduri's first film, 'Ek Chalis Ki Last Local'. In fact, this one goes totally off-track. If you are sex (comedy)-starved, this one won't do much for your appetite. Tip Off: 'KLPD' is loaded with lewd jokes, and double-meaning dialogues. So if you're not a fan of the birds, bees and bathroom humour, stay away.

Before KLPD, director Sanjay Khanduri made Ek Chalis Ki Last Local in 2007 and since he got it right back then, it seems he decided to use the same plot for his second film, only changing the backdrop and actors. So Mumbai becomes Delhi and the local train is replaced by the Delhi metro. But unlike his first film, KLPD is teeming with lame stereotypes. Some clever writing could have helped this film but dialogues like 'Har kisi ki dukaan har taraf se khulti hai' and 'Mai kisi aurat ko nahi jaanta, mai to virgin hoon!' make it even worse.

Kismet, Love, Paisa, Dilli, mayhem, sheer baloney... one could go on. But what about some sense and substance? Kismat Love Paisa Dilli never promised any of that. So there. The makers of KLPD might as well, as a statutory warning, have added another letter to the title to denote ASSAULT. Yes, this wannabe comic thriller is an all-out assault on the senses.KLPD is a messy jumble that lurches almost blind from one free-for-all situation to another in the fond hope of tickling the funny bone. It ends up trying the patience of the audience. Stay away!

‘Kismet Love Paisa Dilli’ acronyms to that which cannot be expanded or explained in civil society. But it did get in a bunch of young fellows into the theatre for the first-day-first-show, all primed for the promise the film’s title held out. The director didn’t disappoint them : there is enough in the film’s fabric—crude, rude, vulgar—that can keep the most expectant fellow happy. The lines are full of allusions to private body parts and bodily functions executed in private, and of course there’s a `rape joke’. The leading man is sufficiently potty-mouthed, and pee-oriented too. The row ahead of me was in splits half the time : I had a tough time sitting through this one.

What’s Good: The Captain and his gang. What’s Bad: The nonsense script; the annoying gags; some irritating characters.Loo Break: Anytime!Watch or Not?:Sanjay Khanduri’s story and script is a confusing web which barely makes you laugh. Don’t be surprised if the movie reminds you a lot of Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local. No, seriously avoid this one. There are no two ways about it and we’re not even bothering with a pun this time: KLPD is a painful watch that’s better avoided.

What’s this film about then? Well, films don’t always have to be about something, unless they start taking themselves seriously. This one eventually does, which is when you really want to bang your head against the seat before you, but never mind that. Khanduri’s Ek Chaalis Ki Last Local, though hardly a masterpiece, was a reasonably okay piece of funny trash in the mould of “Mumbai Noir”. This complete KLPD, in comparison, hurts.

  1. It is an acknowledged truth that your second venture dictates whether you are supremely talented and here to stay or were plain lucky in your first endeavor. Khanduri has the trappings of a fine storyteller, a narrator of wacky stories and let's give the credit where it's due, KLPD - KISMET LOVE PAISA DILLI has moments that charm you [in the second hour], but they are few and far between in this case. The problem with KLPD - KISMET LOVE PAISA DILLI is, you keep going back to his earlier film while watching this one, although the situations/sub-plots are completely diverse. The recall value of EK CHALIS KI LAST LOCAL is so strong, and with Khanduri borrowing a few occurrences from that film, KLPD - KISMET LOVE PAISA DILLI comes across as a deprived cousin
