Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola Movie Review

Ratings:4/5 Review By: Rajeev Masand  Site: CNN IBN (IBNLive)
Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola might well be described as Bhardwaj’s holiday movie – a mad story with crazy characters – but fortunately for us, even in a light mood, the director can be counted on to say interesting things. This outrageous comedy after all shows little concern for our health as it delivers laugh after side-splitting laugh. Returning to form after the disappointing Saat Khoon Maaf, Vishal Bhardwaj gives us a film that’s enjoyable and relevant in equal measure. I’m going with four out of five for Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola. The year’s first gem has arrived – don’t miss it!

MATRU KI BIJLEE KA MANDOLA is definitely not Vishal's best work, though the master touch is evident in several sequences. The story barely moves in the first hour; there are stretches when the account begins to blur. Thankfully, the sequence of events and some exceptional moments in the post-interval portions save the film from tripping. At the same time, I wish to add that the film could've done with some judicious trimming for a stronger impact. It's way too lengthy! On the whole, MATRU KI BIJLEE KA MANDOLA holds your attention in parts, but that's not enough. The first half is lackluster, while the post-interval part catches some steam. However, the excessive length plays a spoilsport. Below expectations!

On the upside, Azmi's performance is effortlessly evil until the last swig. Anushka plays her now-familiar loud-spunky-sexy babe, unconvincing but attractive as an eccentric rustic. But despite her Pond-girl entry in see-through top and teeny shorts, Mandola's heart-throb is Imran Khan who's red-hot (literally), stubble and a sardonic air pumping his sex-appeal. With its Trilbys and tractors, malls and Maoism, its stretch limo and smart-boy! lines, MKBKM could have been such a fun ride. But sadly, director ka bhi man dola, rather too often.

Vishal Bhardwaj’s dialogues are good and evoke laughter. But they are also meant more for the gentry audience. The comedy in the film will appeal to one small section of the audience only. Here, it must be mentioned that while a very few comic punches are mass-oriented, most of them are of the kind which will find favour with only the classes. For instance, every reference to Mao Tse Tung and related jokes are very class-appealing and will not be comprehended by the masses. On the whole, Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola entertains only in parts. It is otherwise lengthy and boring and will, therefore, fail to make its mark at the box-office. Losing.

It's theatrical, insightful, wickedly clever and, often, too funny to even laugh at, if you know what I mean. It is also, as may be apparent, an utterly random movie, sometimes jarringly uneven and frequently meandering. And yet it works, because it is, at every single step, unexpected and surprising. This film swings with two sultans, each spurring the other on toward a sillier spectacle, a sight of grand lunacy. Laced with both acid and arsenic, Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola isn't everyone's cup of tea. It takes a while to get into its groove, but changes gears with spectacular finesse after that.

It is a wild, wacky, wicked satire that carries the unmistakable Vishal Bhardwaj signature. But it leaves you with mixed feelings. It isn’t a big, bloated blockbuster wannabe. It has its daring share of moments that defy popular expectations. Despite the uneven quality of the ambitious narrative, Bhardwaj packs in just about enough quirky energy to make Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola generally watchable. Few filmmakers in Mumbai engage with ideas and issues of contemporary relevance as felicitously as Bhardwaj. He might have fallen short this time around, but even when he is not at his best, he is infinitely better than most in the business.

Bhardwaj brings high energy to some parts of the film. As always his musical compositions and background score are delightful. Just as he did with Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor in Omkara, he finds the inner actor in Imran Khan in MKBKM. But his storytelling skills are not well-honed here. So, unfortunately,MKBKM does not deliver all that it promises.

Once the director gets to the point, we realize it’s a very meat-and-potatoes kind of story, the most meat-and-potatoes Bharadwaj has been, despite the weird contrivances he includes in the telling of it. The conflict is the familiar poor `kisaan’ vs rapacious overlords, and true love vs forced alliances, and how education save our souls, shot through in some parts with the sort of VB flourish that make his films such delights. But he makes us wait for the good bits, does Bharadwaj, and by then we’ve nearly fallen asleep.

This I attribute to overconfidence. Look at it like this. A team needs one run to win. Nine wickets are gone with 6 balls remaining. Bhardwaj is at the crease. All he has to do is tap the ball and run for a single. So what does he do? At the very first ball he jumps down the crease and tries to hoist it out of the ground. Meanwhile, the wicket-keeper has dislodged his bails!

Ten minutes before the ending of the first half (which is mighty slow), the movie is still trying to set the plot. Just before the interval, there’s a twist (not like you couldn’t guess it) and during the break, you wonder what the movie is trying to show. This confusion is carried on till the end of the second half, in which, characters appear and disappear conveniently. At the end of it, even though they had worthy intentions, I doubt the filmmakers knew what exactly they wanted to portray through their various characters. Watch the film for Pankaj Kapoor and Shabana Azmi and some fun that the duo bring about. But don’t expect too much out of it. Final warning: Bharadwaj fans, stay away from this one.

Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola may have been Bhardwaj’s attempt at edgy humor. But I wish he had made it his own. The characters had so much potential, if only they would have been developed. Performances were superlative, but what’s the point when the story is haphazard. Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola may still be entertaining for many for its sheer randomness, but it was definitely not my cup of tea. I will find many hard-core Bhardwaj fans agreeing.
Verdict: Entertaining for its mad-twisted characters. But, Bhardwaj fans may not be pleased.

What’s Good: The funny bits; the Haryanvi setting; Gulabo’s appearances; Pankaj Kapur’s act. What’s Bad: The slow first half; the undecipherable parts of Pankaj Kapur’s speech; Imran Khan’s lack of rustic charm. Loo break: A few before the interval. Watch or Not?: Watch it for a nice dose of rustic comedy!

MKBKM is a comedy-drama that revolves around three zany characters. Bharadwaj does a clean job by creating some peculiar lead characters and placing them in whacky, quirky situations. On the whole, Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is gripping and funny so far. We hope Bharadwaj does a justice till the end.

Imran has done a good job at looking rugged, though he did slip into his usual guy-next-door persona a couple of times. But on the whole, commendable. So if you have an option of watching the movie at a theatre or waiting for it to premiere on television, we suggest you choose the second. Trust us, you won’t be missing out on anything.
And one message for Vishal Bhardwaj as we sign off – you can do better!

‘Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola’ takes us into a whirlwind journey that’s incredibly crafted, brilliantly textured, and lusciously witted. The narrative never loses focus, and plods along with effortless ease and impeccable finesse. Each situation is created with utmost sincerity and each line is written with tremendous delight. He uses his quirky sense of humour to turn the politics of an unjust society, and probably Hindi cinema, around. And, he’s got an aged, double-layered landlord, a light-eyed Communist and a gorgeous wild child to help him in the exercise. His satire remains what it sets out to do, without ever shifting into a full-fledged reform movement. And, therein lies his brilliance.

  2. With ‘MATRU KI BIJLEE KA MANDOLA’, Vishal Bhardwaj shows a new flare of humor that may look absurd and silly on the whole but at the very same time, it’s also incredibly apt, undone in the past & undoubtedly very smart-rational & coherent…the only condition is you have to be attentive enough to read between the lines & sharp enough to single out where exactly it is coming from and precisely where its targeted point is.

The film largely has a satire feel that goes on the gross-root level to talk about farmers in North India […Haryana in this case] being forced to loose their lands as a double-faced drunkard capitalist [played brilliantly by the extraordinaire Pankaj Kapur] and an opportunist corrupt politician [played by the competent Shabana Azmi] want it to trade with its industrialized modern version of materialistic social reformation. Now, this sure was a self-destroying task to start with but hats off to Vishal for making this subject less preachy-adeptly entertaining…with a genre that’s radically witty and comically radical!

So, is it a perfect film? No, not even close to it! It starts off well, ends well and creates some genuinely laugh-out-loud moments in between with gags; mostly with Pankaj Kapur in it like him seeing ‘gulaabi bhains’ whenever he’s driven by his urge to drink alcohol, his ‘night-walk on helicopter’ with Imran etc. but the bumpy uneven pace, overtly stretched duration, theatrical screenplay & struggling performances of Anushka & Imran makes it restricted to ‘An Enjoyable Watch’ rather than being ‘A beyond expectations experimental cinema’. Watch it solely for the institution named Pankaj Kapur, and you’ll not be disappointed at all. [3/5]
