Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana Movie Review

Ratings:3.5/5  Review by Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN (IBNLive)
In the end, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana is a warm and fuzzy comedy that benefits from the insider’s eye that the director casts on this garrulous community, and their love of food and family. At 2 hours and 15 minutes, the film feels bloated and over-long, but stay with it and you won’t regret it.I’m going with three out of five for director Sameer Sharma’s Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana. All that talk of food will make you very hungry when the lights come back on again.

On the whole, LUV SHUV TEY CHICKEN KHURANA is a joyride from start to end. The film works because the written material, the execution of the subject and the performances complement each other wonderfully. This delectable dish ought to be savoured for certain!

Sameer Sharma, has an interesting recipe here for wholesome entertainment, with clean comedy (pure vegetarian, if you like!).The story makes our tummies growl too long before a whiff of the real thing. Yes, the cook-time seems a bit much for hungry filmi foodies. This isn't the perfect chicken recipe for your soul, but never mind, it's the simplicity of emotions that fill you up, leaving a good after-taste.So go and chakh loh, your taste buds will slurp it up. Swear on the wishbone!

On the whole, Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana is good in parts only. Its character actors entertain more than its lead actors although the lead actors have full-fledged roles. Also, it seems to be a case of much ado about very little, if not nothing. Besides, its release during the dull pre-Diwali days will come in the way of realisation of its full box-office potential.

In the garb of a character akin to the Shakespearean Fool playacting, observing, commenting and hurling jibes at all and sundry, Sharma is outstanding. He adds as much value to the film as the marvellously apt musical score by Amit Trivedi. Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana is just the kind of cinematic repast that those might have lost their appetite for Bollywood comedies could do with.

The everydayness of the language in this likeable film is one of its pleasures.Only thing is, the film gets a little inert here and there, not making as much of its stated quirkiness as it should have, it’s one-strand theme getting too stretched over a couple of hours

The bright yellow mustard fields of Punjab add to the raw yet picturesque beauty of Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana. Kudos to the team that previously brought us different cinema such as Dev. D andKhosla Ka Ghosla for creating a rather low-budget yet smart and heart-warming film. Once you discover what the ‘secret recipe’ of Chicken Khurana is, it will all become worthwhile. Besides, if you cook at home, you may want to try it out too. Of course, this is only a suggestion for I take no responsibility for the effect. The true flavor of Punjab – lap it up!
Quirkiness at it’s best. This is bare-ass Punjabi, straight out of the fields.

It is an average fare, a film that has its heart in the right place but tries too hard too often. Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana benefits greatly from Sharma's presence, Amit Trivedi's enjoyable score and a funny second half. It's a light-hearted drama that leaves you with a smile, but in the week of Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro and Skyfall, LSTCK is at best a good third choice.

The script becomes a little sluggish in between. A little more crisper editing could have been done. That is perhaps the only 'minus' in the film! Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana is the ideal movie to watch this weekend!

What’s Good: The excellent music; the very apt casting and performances; the dialogues. What’s Bad: The slow pace; parts of the movie are predictable. It takes a lot to make something as fine and simply enjoyable like Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana. Though it takes some time for the flavours to set in and brew, excellent acting and music in the film make it worth the wait.

It has got all the right ingredients- the mustard fields, the happy-go-lucky Punjabis, the tractors, the quirky bizzare characters, the brazen yet lovable hero, a brewing love story, superb music by Amit Trivedi, and in spite of these ingredients the films isn’t ‘cooked’ well. Somewhere, some ingredient is missing.
Watch it for the super talented cast as they manage to give a spicy tadka to an otherwise bland film.

Luv Shuv Tey Chicken Khurana is a scrumptious ride through rural Punjab, with a look at some real people, a taste of Punjabi hospitality and an aftertaste of love, belonging and genuine Punjabi humour! Don’t be surprised if you are tempted to rush to the nearest dhaba to indulge in some chicken immediately after watching this feast of a film!

Sharma’s film is part of an industry saturated in Punjabi gloss. Every part of India has adopted thesangeet and the ghagra-choli as a part of weddings. This is refreshingly pared-down Punjabiyat, without any aspirational value. It just gives you a few genuine laughs.
