Rowdy Rathore Movie Review

Ratings:1/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive(CNN IBN)
Rowdy Rathore is the kind of movie that’s made by people with a cash register in place of their brain. Because no legitimate reason, other than financial gain, can justify why this movie was made – it has no story or plot whatsoever, the characters are entirely forgettable, and it’s so long and loud and silly that the laughs dry up early on. Remade from a super-hit Telugu film, but with no attempt to tailor its aesthetics or its sensibility for a new audience, Rowdy Rathore is packed with brutal action scenes shot in slo-mo, low-brow humor, and regressive drama. The problem isn’t that the film is merely mindless, but that it revels in making you squirm uncomfortably. Rowdy Rathore comes off as nothing more than a cheap attempt to rob moviegoers of their money!

So is ROWDY RATHORE a replica of VIKRAMARKUDU? Like WANTED, director Prabhu Dheva scrounges the essence, retains the distinctive design of the quintessence, but alters it slightly. But what doesn't change is the intent of making a full-blown masala entertainer. Yes, ROWDY RATHORE is vintage masala fare that has a larger-than-life hero, who triumphs against all odds. Final word? Entertainment, entertainment, entertainment thy name is ROWDY RATHOREOn the whole, ROWDY RATHORE is designed to magnetize the masses in hordes. The accurate blend of action, emotions, drama and humor, besides a superlative performance by Akshay Kumar, makes this motion picture an immensely pleasurable and delightful movie watching experience. If you savor typical masaledaar fares, this one should be on your have-to-watch listing for certain. Dhamaal entertainer!

A good meaty chunk of pointless predictability, brutal violence avenged by even more sadistic violence, and one-liners than make no sense: everything serving only to prostrate the film at the feet of the star, making him the all-powerful messiah who can alone deliver us from boredom if we applaud loud enough. So here's yet another assembly-line actioner, and, for what it's worth, it's not as awful, really. It can hardly be called a film, but ah well. Watch it if only to remind yourself of old Khiladi flicks and remember a time when we used to think heroines couldn't get any plumper or sillier than Mamta Kulkarni. Ah, naive youth.

To all the directors, producers, actors who are inflicting eighties-style, low-IQ, deafeningly loud, unapologetically crass, mind-numbing movies on us, I just want to say: Don't angry me! Don't exhaust me! Don't bludgeon me!. Is this entertaining? Not for me. There were a few fun moments. The film is one more in the line of movies - many of which are remakes from the south - that value masala above all else. But Dabangg and even Wanted, the latter of which was also directed by Prabhu Deva, were far more cohesive and compelling. Rowdy Rathore is pure noise. Only the brave should venture in.

The film's an unabashed, gunpowder-hot, sambar-spiced star-vehicle which runs along energetically most of the time because its star - Akshay Kumar, essaying a double role as Rathore and Shiva - is worth it, something that's emphasized often. A lull in its second half aside, Rowdy's mostly quick-stepping, moving from Mumbai's malls to medieval Bihar.Fans will love Akshay's mooch-twirling masala-act but be ready for hardcore action too - some pretty gruesome.

An air of unabashed, if generally harmless, imbecility pervades Rowdy Rathore. With very little substance to play around with, the film spreads itself dangerously thin. He throws every trick that he knows in the book into this predictable remix of a Telugu hit – song, dance, crass humour, romance, thunderous action and a fearless supercop out to outsmart a bunch of murderous marauders. It’s the good old unstoppable all-or-nothing approach. Prabhu Deva obviously has no faith in any form of subtlety. He goes the whole hog and revels in unbridled excess every step of the wayThe thing about a film like Rowdy Rathore is that it lets the viewer stay a step ahead of the action, which is a perfect recipe for an instant connect with the masses.Riddled with an array of loud, lame and specious contrivances, Rowdy Rathore plays out pretty much like a comic-book fantasy rendered in the form of a live-action film. Go for it if you must, but don’t expect the earth from it

Good:There are more daredevil stunts than you’d find in a vintage Dharmendra or Amitabh Bachchan flick. Bad:Sense, logic, clean entertainment are conspicuous by their absence. Bottomwhine: Rowdy Rathore leaves you exhausted, as if you’d come out of a war zone. Recuperate in peace.

After meandering aimlessly for most of the first half, Rowdy Rathore gathers steam just before the interval and the second half makes for entertaining viewing. Not because the plot is so cool, or Akshay is so funny. They aren’t.Rowdy Rathore has some very well-executed action scenes.A lot in Rowdy Rathore defies general logic, but who goes to watch these movies for smart repartee anyway.Akshay’s me-too is fun while it lasts. Watch it for him, lest he feels bad for jumping on the South remake bandwagon too late to get any attention

`Rowdy Rathore` was supposed to be Akshay`s comeback film as an action star. Yes, the action is there. In huge dollops, but somehow lacks the punch of Khiladi Kumar. The premise of the film may be good, but the treatment is that of a typical south Indian pot boiler. No harm in that either, just that most of the scenes lack logic. The violence is gory and in some places cringe-worthy.Just when you start giving up on the film, Akshay Kumar gives you some hope with his funny antics and witty dialogues in the later part of the second half. Prabhu Deva fails to take the film anywhere, uses a tried and tested formula which may have worked down south but is sadly extremely annoying and garish when remade in Hindi. Watch it for Akshay if you must. But don’t expect his usual antics, it is clearly not there. Ratings: Two cheers for only Akshay Kumar. He tries
