The Amazing Spider Man Movie Review

If anything, it’s Spidey, not Gwen, who slots most comfortably into the love interest role: while Raimi got fanboys drooling with Kirsten Dunst in a rain-soaked vest top, Webb’s leading lady remains clothed and dry. Instead, the camera ogles Garfield, whose glutes are showcased quite magnificently in his skintight bodysuit. Enough superhero films are produced for teenage boys who used to dress up in Spider-Man pyjamas. At last, here’s one for an entirely different audience, whose other halves may soon be dressing up in Spider-Man pyjamas for their benefit.

Spidey is the ultimate New York superhero, and this is full of nods to the city’s movie heritage. There’s a touch of Woody Allen to some of Garfield’s twitchy scenes, while ‘King Kong’ looms over Spidey’s skyscraper-top encounter with The Lizard. There’s even a scene where Parker mopes down the street with his shoulders hanging low like DeNiro in ‘Taxi Driver’. This lone gun with a red sock over his head also feels an urge to clean up the streets – but his New York is mostly benign, a place where crane drivers and cops wave him on his way and the skyline sparkles in approval. Soft, yes, but also satisfying.

As the film progresses, we see the familiar structure of SPIDER-MAN with similar necessary events transpiring just with different scenarios and better acting.  At the end of the day, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN is probably an appropriately fun, summer, superhero movie, perhaps moreso than the originals.  If only it had come out first, I might have been able to be more excited.  As it stands, compared with all the other superhero films, THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN fails to offer anything memorable.

Spider-Man, he takes too long to don the Spidey suit. In fact, for most part he is seen settling scores without the Spidey mask... after long, long gaps. Finally, even his web does not come naturally to him. He has to work to get that mechanism in place. Of course, when he does dizzily bungee jump across the Manhattan skyline - specially in the King Kong type climax -- he still sends a thrill down your spine.A word about Irrfan Khan. While Irrfan says it's not a long role, Marc Webb says it's pivotal. We say: You decide.

I am not so crazy about the new Spidey guy though. Andrew Garfield, though he has the physicality and I liked him in Never Let Me Go, is not my idea of Spider-Man. Garfield's excessively hyper body language (what's with that constant scratching of hair, licking lips, trembling tone?), petulant response and that obvious 'OH-MY-GOD-I'M SPIDER-MAN' astonishment is distracting until he's calmed down by Stone's loving lip-locks. (Nope, none of that sexy, upside-down kissing moments in this one but that's no downer.) First impressions are something else, especially of the favourable kind. Tobey Maguire's lost eyes, boyish candor, radiant goodness and that exclusive ability to make you feel bad for him/with him are sorely missed. Garfield, sensitive as he is, doesn't quite enjoy this level of empathy. What I really found interesting though the film doesn't end in the spirit of action but lingers on a bit to emphasise on Spider-Man's growth and realisations. And after a brief roll of closing credits, there's a sly suggestion of a possibility. We know it as sequel.

While the story of The Amazing Spider-Man just about succeeds in working its way around origin-story fatigue in viewers, watching Spider-Man skim past the skyline with the greatest of ease never ceases to be an exhilarating experience thanks to the vivid employment of 3D and James Horner’s rousing score. The Amazing Spider-Man is a reasonably well-done reboot which manages to make an emotional connection with its audience irrespective of how it appears to ostensibly shun its source material and the ever-present but sometimes- stodgy back story. However, the action, performances and stylised spectacles is thrown the audience’s way are sure to have its senses tingling all the same.

Curious to learn more about his missing father, Peter sneaks around Connors’ office and ends up getting bitten by a genetically modified spider. The bite makes Peter stronger, faster, heightens his senses and more. Suddenly, the world starts falling in his lap: he gets his lady love, he gets back at the bullies, does some genetic research with Connors and even has fun with his Spider powers.
But the peace is not meant to be. A cruel twist of fate takes his beloved Uncle Ben away from him. Connors uses Peter’s formula (actually belonging to Peter’s father) and uses it to renew his stump of an arm. While the formula doesn’t work exactly as planned, Connors begins to wreak havoc with his newfound powers.
Will Spider-Man be able to stop him?

For the hardcore SPIDER-MAN fans that have been complaining about the reboot, I strongly suggest you give this a chance as this is really as good a reboot as we could have gotten. Garfield and Stone are absolutely perfect, the film is well directed and tightly paced (I couldn't believe this was 136 minutes, as it felt shorter), and an intriguing direction for future instalments is laid out, although this means a few unresolved plot threads that some critics are already complaining about (be patient). I know the Raimi films are much loved, but it can't be denied that this is just...better. It's a strong, strong film, and an extremely promising start to a franchise that could really blow us all away if we give it a chance.
