The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey has little of the awe and shock and wonder that thrillingly accompanied The Lord of the Rings saga. Those films felt new and exciting and unlike anything we’d already seen at the time. Which illustrates exactly what Jackson is up against this time. Still there’s no denying that there’s solid, skilled filmmaking at the heart of this film. But despite its gorgeous sweeping visuals, spectacular special effects, and some terrific action sequences, this first installment in Jackson’s three-film adaptation can’t help feeling long and overblown and stretched beyond limits. I’m going with three out of five for Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Don’t set your expectations too high, and you’ll come out satisfied.

One of the best things about The Hobbit is the truly magical locations and imagery that are completely immersive and make you feel as if you are in JRR Tolkien's Middle-earth. It will entertain you even if you haven't seen any of the previous Lord of the Rings movies. Also noteworthy is the music, which meshes really well with the film and is not distracting at all. The only issue could be the running time - almost three hours long. But fora subject of this scale, it's completely justified. Good for the entire family. Note: You will not like this film if you do not like epic fantasies.

Judging part one of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings prelude The Hobbit is a bit like reviewing a film after seeing only the first act.Yet here goes: The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is stuffed with Hollywood's latest technology — 3-D, high-speed projection and Dolby's Atmos surround sound system. The result is some eye candy that truly dazzles and some that utterly distracts, It's also overstuffed with, well, stuff. Prologues and sidestepping backstory. Long, boring councils among dwarves, wizards and elves. Part one's embellishments may pay off nicely, but right now, An Unexpected Journey looks like the start of an unnecessary trilogy better told in one film.

Most parts of the score was picked up from the LOTR trilogy, which is something I really didn’t expect. The acting was brilliant and beyond imagination. Martin Freeman acted phenomenally. His character, his bravery, his quirkiness were perfect and top-notch. Sir Ian McKellen, Richard Armitage and the rest of the cast also performed with a lot of elegance and class. LOTR fanatics are sure to freak out (in a good way). Take a bow Peter Jackson. You’ve done it again.

No, the film does not choke on its on linearity, but the progression of chases and scrapes with fierce creatures transform it into the best kind of epic-journey film. And the emotional payoff (Shore's music will take you places, believe me) is well worth the tantalising buildup. Various motives have been attached to the decision to make a full-blown trilogy of Tolkien's relatively slim novel. But on watching the film, the artistic integrity behind it is quite evident. He is simply doing what he couldn't with the Fellowship of the Rings as it would debilitate the telling of the entire tale: taking his time with the adventure, and delving more on the culture and mythology that forms the backdrop of the films.

When the initial rush of a chase or a skirmish dissipates, you are left with the slightly ripped-off feeling of having been here before, but with different costumes, in a “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie or “Clash of the Titans.” Over all, though, the shiny hyper-reality robs Middle-earth of some of its misty, archaic atmosphere, turning it into a gaudy high-definition tourist attraction. But of course it will soon be overrun with eager travelers, many of whom are likely to find the journey less of an adventure than they had expected.
