The Expendables 2 Movie Review

Ratings:3/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN
Considerably more fun than the earlier film, The Expendables 2 doesn’t take itself too seriously, and neither should you. Nevertheless, it’s easy to be exhausted by the relentless stabbings, shootings and decapitations, and if it wasn’t for the film’s self-mocking humor, the charm of this steroidal sequel might have run dry early during its roughly 100-minute runtime.I’m going with three out of five for The Expendables 2. It’s dumb, silly fun. Best enjoyed with lots of popcorn.

Just take your pick -- Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, Jet Li, Chuck Norris, Jean-Claude Van Damme, Bruce Willis, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Liam Hemsworth.rest assured, Expendables 2 delivers more dhamaka in comparison to its prequel. In fact, no sooner does the camera start rolling do you find your heroes running between tanks, explosions, bikes, through jungles.... On the other hand, the very last scene can have any action buff asking for more - Slyvester and Jean-Claude keep their guns aside and choose to fight the fist-and-foot way. And what lies between the beginning and the end? A storyline, a wee bit better than the Expendables, but definitely not cutting edge.

Anyway, as with all action movies we're hoping for some great taglines, little insouciant bon mots that true action heroes casually drop after some piece of mayhem. Sly blows someone to smithereens and says: "Rest in pieces." Ouch. Good one. At one stage, he chances upon a pack of wild dogs, fires his gun into the air to make them scatter and then says: "Take off, Rover." Fido or Rex wouldn't have worked nearly as well.
There's some comedy in there, too, intentional – mostly. As a poignant study of the ageing process, it's on a rough par with The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. For The Expendables 3, they might want to consider enlisting Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson and Judi Dench.

With all due respect to Sylvester Stallone fans, this is a dumb movie. To watch it, is like entering into a war zone where at the mere command of their chief Barney Ross (Stallone), the old boys -- and an utterly undesirable Chinese lass, who seems to know everything about everything -- won't think twice before jumping into the fray. The problem is they don't think at all. Their low IQ banter could put the other Stallone dud like Get Carter to shame. To those who have seen the first part, the dumbness would be familiar.

A few things come in between The Expendables 2 becoming the adrenaline-soaked action lover’s wet dream. One of them is that the film peaks right at the beginning with a well-planned-out retrieval operation of a Chinese millionaire in Nepal. After the plot sets in, the quality of action is wanting especially in terms of hand-to-hand combat. There is also a lack of colourful secondary characters, and not enough Statham. Should you watch the film? Well film will remain the holy grail of casting for action fans of the 80’s and 90’s till the next installment is out. Non-rabid fans won’t get the reverential treatment of the actors who are way past their physical prime. What everyone can probably come to agree with is that that the treatment of the characters could have been more interesting and the overall treatment less cartoonish – something that Stallone tried to do as director in the last one.

You get lot of breathless action scenes and some amount of talking, as would be warranted to build those action scenes around. There are some attempts at humour to leaven the tension, as would be warranted should you care about a group of guys who call themselves expendable. There is a lot of self-awareness, as would be warranted when Sly and Arnie play to their star power. And there is a hint of tragedy

Macho men are back with all the awesome action they jointly offer with guns loaded… arms, ammunition and fully-equipped androgenous automobiles. What more does a true action afficanado really need? Just go with the flow. The dialogues and direction are par excellence. They will make the closet action-film fan step out and enjoy the film in all it’s muscle flexing, adrenaline pumped glory. Most of the members of the starcast are antique. They are aging, yet awesome. The film is rather breezy and enjoyable. A definite one-time watch, made better than the first part, this one despite its gory side, gives you a good feeling at the end. Nothing seemed intentional, the film does everything it is supposed to in the right measure. The film celebrates the coming together of all the independent action heroes yet again to make a spectacular film. Verdict: Interesting and enjoyable, go watch this one.
